The housing minister has reversed the proposal in the Housing And Planning Act 2016 that higher earning local authority tenants should pay higher rents. This is good news for local authorities because the proposed scheme would have had a high administrative burden and it was doubtful whether local authorities would have been able to retain the higher rent receipts. The scheme will now be voluntary.

The government is pressing on with compulsory fixed term tenancies for local authority tenants. A number of our clients have implemented a fixed term tenancy regime which helps them ensure that their limited social housing stock is being used by those who have the greatest need.
