Whilst the GDPR is not yet in force, the ICO has taken a keen interest in personal data apparently harvested from 50 million Facebook users that might have affected the US election and even possibly the vote for the UK to leave the EU.

The current Data Protection Act still has some large teeth and it will be interesting to see how this investigation pans out.

In the meantime, businesses should continue to prepare for a tougher regime under the GDPR. But don't panic! Those businesses that already comply with the DPA should not find it a big step up to reach GDPR level.
